So, whats the deal? Free email? Sweet, I've been looking for another spam decoy!
Yes, free email. You just have to have attended a lan at some point to get an account. Please don't be lame. Don't fill it with spam. Don't have people send warez isos to you. If you are judged to be lame your account will vanish. So don't be.

So, what can I do with it?
We run the mail all ourselves, all the mail is stored on our system. You can access your mailbox with pop3, imap, or webmail, or just have us set up an alias. Pop3 is probably the most popular, webmail is the most nifty, and imap is the most unknown and most awesome. An alias would involve the least amount of work.

I'm a noob, can you explain these magical things to me?
Pop3 is the most commonly used protocol, its probably what you use for your normal isp email. Its a simple protocol really, all it does is pull the mail off the server and dump it on your hard drive, and it is supported by just about every mail reader. You've probably got experience with webmail in one form or another. Think hotmail. The advantage is you can access your mail from anyplace where there is a browser. Imap is similar to pop3 from a user perspective; that is you use a complex mail client like Outlook to read it. But with imap all the mail is stored on the server. The advantage? You get to use your rich client but can access your mail from anywhere. This is REALLY handy if you want to keep your mail synchronized among multiple machines. An alias is just that. All mail going to the account just gets immediately redirected to another one.

How do I set up my mail
First you have to email xwred1@modestolan.com and ask for a mail account or alias, or ask an organizer in person. It only takes about 30 seconds on our end to make an account. Then its on your end. To use:
  • Pop3 - In your mail reader, tell it you are setting up a pop3 account, and when it asks you for your pop3 mail server, simply tell it "modestolan.com". Supply it with your username and password. You'll probably also have to supply it with an outgoing mail server (i.e. smtp server). We don't send any mail for you unless you use webmail. So you have to look up your isp's outgoing mail server and use that.
  • Webmail - Just point your browser to https://webmail.modestolan.com. Should be fairly obvious from there on out.
  • Imap - This is real similar to pop3. Except tell your mail reader that you are setting up an imap account, and tell it "modestolan.com" is the imap server. Again, you also need to tell it to use your isp's outgoing mail server

Any caveats?
Yes. If you use pop3 and you also want to use imap or webmail, you'll have to tell your mail reader to leave the mail on the server. By default pop3 deletes the mail off the server after it pulls it down to your machine. So, if you delete your mail off the server, then imap and webmail aren't going to see it since it isn't there anymore. And also don't forget that we don't supply an outgoing mail server, your isp does. With email, the retrieval and the sending of mail are two independent processes. They're only presented as being related by complex mail readers. Don't ask us to let you send mail. Then we have to do that for everyone who asks. And if we just made it so *anyone* could send mail spammers would use us to send bulk mail. Which is bad.

Speaking of spam, we also plan to implement spam filtering and virus filtering at some undefined time in the near future.

Added 8/16/2007: Secure Login (HTTPS)
Since the server upgrade xwred1 has changed the login page to HTTPS. Go ahead and update your bookmarks to https://webmail.modestolan.com

Added 8/12/2003: Encrypted pop3 and imap
Just today I set up encrypted pop3 and imap on the server. What this means is that now users have the option of encrypting their mail traffic rather than letting the passwords and messages fly in the clear over the wire. All it should take for you to use it is to tell your pop3 or imap client that you want to use the protocol with ssl encryption. Same server and user names.
